Will the procedure be painful?
Patients are comfortably managed with a form of twilight sedation administered via an intramuscular injection, combined with complete facial anaesthesia through a series of numbing nerve blocks. Most patients are comfortable and pain-free throughout the 90-minute procedure, and some may even doze during parts of it.

What about aftercare?
The laser precisely removes damaged layers of skin, so dressings are generally not required. Immediately after the procedure, the face may appear red and swollen but clean. You will need to keep the area clean and apply petroleum jelly or paw-paw ointment as directed. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided in writing, and both you and the person accompanying you home will be fully briefed. Most patients rest comfortably and sleep well that night.

For the first couple of days, a mild stinging sensation similar to sunburn may occur. Simple over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen is typically sufficient. There should be no significant pain beyond this period.

What results can be expected in the long term?
Laser resurfacing is one of the few treatments capable of producing long-lasting improvements. Many patients enjoy benefits for 10 years or more, with skin maintaining a smoother, firmer appearance. Some patients may choose to undergo a repeat treatment after eight to ten years to further support skin tightening and lifting, although the improvements from the initial procedure often remain evident.

Who may not be suitable for this procedure?
Apart from any significant medical conditions, the main consideration is skin type. Darker skin types may be at higher risk of reactive hyperpigmentation and are generally advised against undergoing this procedure. Erbium YAG lasers, however, are considered safer for a broader range of skin tones compared to some other laser technologies.

Another consideration is a history of keloid scarring (thick, raised over-healed scars), which may increase the risk of scarring after treatment.

Are there any risks?
Potential risks include infection, keloid scarring, and changes in pigmentation. When performed by an experienced specialist, these risks are largely preventable and manageable.

It is important to note that the term “laser resurfacing” is sometimes used for treatments such as fractional lasers, radiofrequency devices, microneedling, or plasma treatments. While these procedures are often marketed as “skin resurfacing,” they do not provide the same level of degree or long-lasting results as a full-field Erbium YAG laser resurfacing procedure performed by a specially trained expert.

Although these alternative treatments may appear less expensive per session, they usually require multiple treatments to achieve only a fraction of the benefit. In the long term, this can result in greater total cost, longer recovery periods, and less significant, non-permanent results compared to a properly performed full-field laser resurfacing treatment.
