If you found your little ones suddenly turning up their noses at foods they used to love during the lockdowns, you are certainly not alone. Madeline Calfas explains that the stress and disruption of the pandemic played a massive role in how children relate to their meals.
The Impact Of Stress On Appetite
Children are incredibly sensitive to the energy in the home. When routines were upended and parental stress was high, many kids reached for "comfort" foods, usually those high in sugar and simple carbs, as a way to find some sense of control.
"Stress can absolutely shut down the desire to try new things," says Madeline. "When a child’s nervous system is on high alert, they gravitate toward 'safe' beige foods like pasta, bread, and nuggets because they are predictable and provide a quick hit of energy."
The Importance Of Routine
Lockdowns often meant that structured meal times went out the window, leading to more grazing throughout the day. Madeline notes that this constant snacking meant kids were rarely actually hungry when it came time for a nutritious dinner.
"Hunger is actually a great motivator for trying new veg," Madeline explains. "When we lose that structure, we lose the opportunity for kids to sit down and properly engage with a balanced meal."
How To Get Back On Track
The good news is that fussy eating doesn't have to be a permanent fixture in your home. Madeline suggests a few gentle ways to reintroduce variety:
-
No Pressure Zones: Make meal times about connection rather than a battle over broccoli.
-
Exposure Is Key: Keep putting the healthy stuff on the plate, even if they don't eat it yet. It can take ten or more tries before a child accepts a new taste.
-
Get Them Involved: As we saw with the Stephanie Alexander tips, letting kids help with the prep makes them much more likely to have a nibble.
